Mental Health Worker - Pathfinders Land-Based Healing Project
Location: Taykwa Tagamou Nation
Reports to: Director of Health


About the Role

Taykwa Tagamou Nation is seeking a community based Mental Health Counsellor who will be responsible for providing a range of mental health services, including mental health assessments, therapy/counselling, crisis intervention, and service coordination to a wide range of clientele of 12-29 years presenting mental health problems. This may include confidential individual, family or group counselling about the causes and effect of mental health disorders, support for families dealing with mental health disorders and/or addictions and/or referrals for additional treatment. The Mental Health Counsellor will also provide education to individuals and groups in the community with a focus on mental health topics, such as suicide prevention, substance use, anxiety and depressions, etc. The Mental Health Counsellor will be familiar with other services and resources in the community and work closely to provide information and support when required.

Responsibilities
  • Provide mental health counselling regarding the cause, symptoms and prevention strategies of various mental health issues
  • Prepare needs and risk assessment and plan of care
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of crisis management and the impact of trauma on mental health issues
  • Maintain strict confidentiality guidelines regarding all clients, conversations and referrals
  • Provide treatment referrals
  • Assist individuals to identify their need for youth treatment programs and services
  • Liaise with community agencies and supports
  • Assist in proposals for program funding
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Diploma in Social Services, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or equivalent with a minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of clinical psychology and demonstrated therapy/counselling skills
  • Experience in crisis intervention is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Valid driver’s license and use of a vehicle
  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Knowledge of First Nations traditions and culture
  • Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
